Mimicry:
Dasypeltis scabra is known to imitate the pattern and coloration
of some venomous vipers like Causus rhombeatus, Echis carinatus
or Bitis caudalis (depending on the region). It can also nearly
perfectly imitate the hissing of Causus rhombeatus by scraping its
strongly keeled scales against each other, just like Echis carinatus
does. Therefore, in nature, the layman may easily confuse the one with the other.
But anyway, the first rule in the field is never to get close to a snake, but
always to keep a safe distance.
